Macquarie Island MPA Expansion

The Macquarie Island Marine Protected Area expansion has recently been announced! The Marine Park is set to triple in size, placing an additional 385,000 square kilometers of Australia’s oceans under high protection.

The Macquarie Island Marine Park will grow from 162,000 square kilometers to 475,465 square kilometres, with 385,000 square kilometres of the park completely closed to to fishing, mining and other extractive activities.

After two months of consultation, the Government has signed off on the marine park design. There were over 14,700 submissions received through the process, with over 99% in support.
